ZCorum Announces IPv6 Readiness Testing for ISPs at OPASTCO Winter Convention

Jan 10, 2011 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- ZCorum will debut an IPv6 Readiness Testing Service for independent ISPs today at the OPASTCO Winter Convention in Miami. The service will be unveiled in the Convention's Innovations Showcase and is designed to help broadband service providers evaluate their networks and create a plan for transitioning to IPv6.

It is important for ISPs to understand and prepare for IPv6 now, even if it will take some time to implement. IANA, the organization that distributes IP addresses to the Regional Internet Registries (RIR) will likely allocate the last of its available IPv4 pools this quarter. ARIN, the RIR for the U.S. and Canada, is expected to run out later this year. IPv4 addresses will be in short supply and ISPs will have to adopt an IPv6 transition plan.

ZCorum, a partner to hundreds of independent broadband service providers across the U.S. and Canada, understands that transitioning to IPv6 will be a major challenge for small companies. "We already provide network consulting, management and monitoring services for DSL, cable, fiber and wireless networks. We work side-by-side with independent ISPs every day, so we are uniquely positioned to help them evaluate their networks for IPv6 readiness," says Julie Compann, President and COO.

"Our readiness testing process starts with a review of the network to identify devices we already know are not capable of handling IPv6 traffic," says Scott Helms, Vice President of Technology. Then, ZCorum's engineers inject IPv6 streams into the normal traffic flows and monitor delivery from several end points to locate additional breakpoints. The broadband provider can decide on a transition path to IPv6 based on the test results and then budget for upgrading or replacing equipment over time.

While ISPs research transition options, says Helms, they should be conserving their existing IPv4 allocations to make them last as long as possible. ISPs that want to learn how to conserve their existing IP pools can participate in ZCorum's quick, 5-question survey and receive the free guide How to Conserve IPv4 Addresses While You Plan for IPv6.
