Clash leaves local Afghan interpreter dead, wounds 6 soldiers: Official

PUL-E-ALAM, Afghanistan, Jan 08, 2011 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Clash between Taliban insurgents and security forces left a local interpreter of NATO-led troops dead and injured six soldiers in Logar province 60 km south of Afghan capital Kabul Friday evening, a local official said Saturday.

"Afghan and international soldiers were on routine patrol in Khaja Ali village of Charkh district yesterday evening when they came in contact with Taliban militants and fire exchange happened as a result a local interpreter was killed," district governor Abdul Ghayas Malikzai told Xinhua.

He also said that two Afghan and four international troopers sustained injuries in the firefight lasted for a while. Taliban militants also received casualties, Malikzai asserted but could not give the exact figure.

Spokesman for Logar's provincial governor Deen Mohammad Darwish also confirmed the gun battle but declined to comment on casualties.

Meantime, Zabihullah Mujahid who claims to speak for Taliban outfit in talks with media via cellular phone from undisclosed location confirmed the clash, insisting "six soldiers were killed " but Malikzai rejected the claim as mere baseless.
