Research in Motion has revealed plans to move its QNX-based Blackberry Tablet operating system to multi-core smartphones and tablets in the next decad...

(Computer Weekly (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Research in Motion (RIM) has revealed plans to move its QNX-based Blackberry Tablet operating system to multi-core smartphones and tablets in the next decade.

The operating system is to make its debut on RIM's PlayBook tablet computer, expected to be released in the UK no sooner than April 2011. RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis discussed the plans at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference in San Francisco, AppleInsider reports.

As RIM's smartphones begin to include multi-core processors, they will all be running the Playbook platform, said Lazaridis, who believes the BlackBerry Tablet OS will help RIM jump into the next decade of mobile computing.

He said while rival Apple was trying to upgrade a mobile phone OS for tablets, RIM was starting with a "bona-fide mobile computing platform" for the devices.
