(Computer Weekly (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Richard Branson's Virgin has launched its iPad-only magazine Project which is now available to download from Apple's App Store.

Project magazine, by Virgin Digital Publishing, covers international culture, business and travel. A preview on Apple's App Store, said Project is, "A revolutionary multimedia magazine built specially for your iPad - packed with international culture, entertainment, design, business and travel. And nuclear weapons. Oh, and Jeff Bridges." Media companies see iPad publications as an opportunity for a new type of interactive journalism for which typically affluent tablet PC owners will be willing to pay.

A report by the Pew Research Centre last week found that 9% of higher-income households in the US own a tablet PC, compared with 3% in less well-off homes.

Gartner predicts tablet sales will reach 19.5 million units in 2010 owing to the popularity of Apple's iPad.

Project magazine is compatible with Apple's iPad and requires iOS 4.2. It costs £1.79 a issue from the App Store.

Rupert Murdoch's iPad-only newspaper The Daily will be available in December, according to the Financial Times.
