ENTANET: Entanet encourages IPv6 adoption and feedback

Nov 26, 2010 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Entanet, the pioneering wholesale voice and data communications provider, discusses recent comments made by Vint Cerf, known to many as one of the fathers of the Internet, that the UK will run out of IPv4 addresses well before the end of 2011.

Entanets Chief Technical Officer, Steve Lalonde, argues that ISPs are blaming the slow rate of IPv6 adoption on the need to invest in new and expensive equipment in order to support the new addresses. Others are using the apparently low consumer take-up of IPv6 as an excuse for putting off investment.

Essentially, the Internet will not stop working when IPv4 addresses run out. However, future growth and innovation will be hindered without IPv6 uptake. In the worst case, it would become impossible for ISPs to accommodate any new Internet subscribers, he says.

Lalonde also discusses Entanets early adoption of IPv6 and argues that some ISPs are compromising their network performance and even becoming technically negligent. It will also be important to ISPs looking to remain competitive as some customers may not want to stay with ISPs that cant provide them with IPv6 addresses, especially once the remaining IPv4 addresses have dried up.

Entanet is actively encouraging feedback from resellers and end users that have adopted IPv6. We believe ISPs should explain why they are holding off and encourage resellers and end users to provide feedback on their experiences. If you are successfully using IPv6 we would like to know your success stories and also about any problems you encountered. Those willing to share their experiences should email [email protected].
