Covia Labs Named a "Top Performing Technology" in U.S. Military's 2010 CWID Event

Covia Labs, Inc. today announced that it has been recognized as a "Top Performing Technology" in the recently released assessments of the 2010 Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) events that took place in June 2010.

Covia, which was sponsored for CWID 2010 by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), demonstrated its software platform that enables encrypted interoperable communications between a wide array of devices and equipment. The demonstrations took place at the U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) headquarters located at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Dahlgren Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Va.

At the USNORTHCOM event, a simulated terrorist attack in the U.S. was staged, where participating companies demonstrated technologies to enable encrypted and reliable interoperable communications between response personnel from the U.S. and Canadian military, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and local emergency responder, police and fire agencies. The Covia demonstration, designated the Collaborative Alert and Respond System (CARS), deployed Covia's software to a variety of platforms including personal digital assistants, cell phones, and computers, and it operated over many communication media types, including cellular telephone and satellite networks. Throughout the demonstration, using the CARS Covia server, users successfully demonstrated secure synchronization of messages, imagery, GPS locations, and Blue Force Tracking across mobile phones. The servers also allowed users to form ad hoc operation response teams to communicate through mobile devices and email.

CWID is a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff-directed annual event that engages cutting-edge information technology, focusing on operational shortfalls identified by combatant commanders and government agencies. Technologies are approved for participation because they address a new information sharing capability or might improve an existing capability. The demonstrations, which take place in various locations worldwide, focus on technology discovery, risk reduction, and coalition interoperability. Technologies are assessed using real-world inspired warfighter, Homeland Security/Homeland Defense and emergency responder scenarios. During demonstrations, technologies may receive three types of assessments which include User Utility, Interoperability and Information Assurance. Assessment results are captured in CWID's annual final report which informs the defense, federal and state acquisition community with decision-quality data.

Covia's software platform offers a cost-effective way for government and military organizations to integrate consumer mobile phones and commercially available devices into their operations. Since Covia creates an independent and encrypted communications system, it can also operate across existing carrier networks to supplement existing public safety radio equipment and private networks, with greater coverage and richer media. For example, devices within the Covia system could provide a map with continuously moving icons that represent the current locations of emergency response personnel, equipment and command sites.
