[November 09, 2010] BRIEF: Tug Boats En Route to Rescue Stranded Cruise Ship Tweet Nov 09, 2010 (KTLA-TV - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- LONG BEACH Tug boats are en route Monday night to rescue a cruise ship that caught fire and was stranded off the coast of Mexico. The cruise ship Carnival Splendor was operating on emergency power after a fire broke in the engine room. The fire has been extinguished. No injuries to guests or crew have been reported. The ship is sitting dead in the water approximately 55 miles west of Punta San Jacinto, Mexico and sea conditions are calm. Several key shipl systems, including air conditioning, hot food service, flushing toilets and telephones are not available. The ship's crew is actively working to restore partial services. The tugs will tow the vessel to Ensenada, Mexico in an effort to get the guests home as quickly as possible. The vessel's captain is in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard which has deployed aircraft and cutters to the cruise ship's location. Carnival Splendor was on the first leg of a seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise that departed Sunday from Long Beach. After the fire, passengers were initially asked to move from their cabins to the ship's upper open deck areas. Currently, passengers are being provided with bottled water and food items.
