'Dance of Life' dancer charged in two of Belleville's tire slashings

BELLEVILLE, Oct 27, 2010 (Belleville News-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A 48-year-old Lenzburg man on Wednesday was charged with two counts of criminal damage to property in connection with two of the 33 tire slashings that occurred last week in Belleville.

Susan L. Stone, also known as David L. Stone, was being held by Belleville Police Wednesday in lieu of $125,000 bail, according to Belleville Police Capt. Donald Sax.

The two slashings in which Stone is charged happened Sunday at the Green Mount Commons shopping center -- one at the Walmart Supercenter and one at Lowe's.

Stone refers to himself as the "Dance of Life Dancer," and is a fixture at St. Louis metro area festivals where he wears tutus, ribbons and other flowing clothing.

Another 30 cases, which happened mostly at churches and businesses, are under review by the state's attorney's office, pending further evidence, Sax said. He said several more have been reported since police first released the information about the multiple tire slashings, though he wasn't sure exactly how many.

Police aren't seeking any other suspects in the case.

Sax said the arrest was the result of police work, not a tip from the public. Police had offered a $500 reward. Sax couldn't provide a motive in the case.

Stone has multiple convictions in St. Clair County for retail theft, a couple for telephone harassment, and one for disorderly conduct.

One of the original 33 slashings police reported was an isolated case.

Sax advises those who on Sunday evening had vehicles on parking lots of businesses along Carlyle Avenue to examine their tires -- they may be damaged but just have not yet gone flat. Most of the reported slashings occurred that day.
