BRIEF: Antitrust regulators asked to review Google-Yahoo Japan deal

TOKYO, Oct 20, 2010 (dpa - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A major Japanese online shopping operator said Wednesday it had asked Japan's competition watchdog to review Yahoo Japan Corp's plan to tie up with Google Inc.

"The tie-up between the two companies would lead to Google monopolizing information," a statement by online shopping company Rakuten Inc said.

Yahoo Japan has almost 60 per cent of the Internet search services market in the country while Google has close to 40 per cent, according to Kyodo News.

If they were to team up, the resulting monopoly "could stifle the development and growth of not only Internet search engines but also many Internet-related services in the country," it added.

The announcement of the tie-up also triggered criticism from Microsoft Corp.

But the Japan Fair Trade Commission said the deal would cause no immediate problems, given that the two companies plan to provide their respective Internet search services separately.

Yahoo Japan announced in late July that it planned to adopt Google's Internet search and advertisement technology.
