[October 05, 2010] BRIEF: CHP on lookout for road's distracted drivers Tweet Oct 05, 2010 (Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Not that it's ever OK to do it, but drivers especially want to refrain from texting, applying makeup, checking directions and talking into cell phones Tuesday. The California Highway Patrol is conducting a distracted driving campaign with numerous Los Angeles County law enforcement agencies today and again and on Oct. 26. (If you want to note it on your electronic calendar, do it when you're not behind the wheel.) "I sent an e-mail out to all of our officers encouraging them to write up every distracted driver that they see," Glendale Police Sgt. Dennis Smith said. "I encourage them to do it all the time, but I want them to send me a stat sheet of all the violations on the 5th and the 26th, so I can compile the statistics and they can be forwarded to the CHP." Today's data from local agencies and additional information will be presented at an Oct. 14 news conference at Dodger Stadium. "It's enforcement and education," said CHP Officer Charmaine Fajardo, a spokeswoman for the agency. "We basically want to get the message out there about the dangers of all distracted driving, not just cell phone use."
