New Facebook page built vs erring cops

LAGUNA, Oct 03, 2010 (Philippine Daily Inquirer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Crime reporting goes interactive as the Laguna police built a Facebook page where citizens can upload amateur video of crimes or complaints against law enforcers or persons in authority.

It was also the Laguna police that was first to tap the popular social networking site in August when it began posting online the list of the province's most wanted criminals.

"This will provide a window for people to make their complaints known," said Senior Supt. Gilbert Cruz, Laguna police chief.

The Facebook page, Abusado dot com, may now be accessed after its formal launch on Thursday.

But Cruz was quick to note that the page would also accept photos or video reports from or by citizens outside Laguna.

"We will just collect them and forward them to the concerned police offices," he said.

Cruz cited for instance the footage taken from a cell phone camera showing a naked man, believed to be a crime suspect, being tortured by policemen.

Later reports said Senior Insp. Joselito Binayug of the Manila Police District was suspected to be the police officer on the video.

Cruz said the video and photos could be used as primary evidence to prompt a police investigation or an entrapment operation.

With over 500 million active Facebook users worldwide, "we believe this will speed up crime busting," Cruz said.
