Activists Oppose Nike's Promotional Ad For New WVU Football Uniforms (NKE,MEE)

Sep 02, 2010 (SmarTrend News Watch via COMTEX) -- Activists that are trying to stop mountain top removal coal mining in Appalachia are angry with Nike's (NYSE:NKE) promotional ad for a new West Virginia football uniform that is designed as a tribute to the 29 victims of the Upper Big Branch mine explosion.

The issue that activists have is with the image of a flat, treeless mountaintop, the sound of an explosion and the image of falling rock that is on the uniform. According to those opposed, the ad appears to be an endorsement of the controversial form of strip mining and misses a key point about the Massey Energy's (NYSE:MEE) Upper Big Branch explosion, which was that the mine that exploded was an underground operation.

Nike did not immediately return telephone and e-mail messages.
