BRIEF: Bartelso dairy farmer dies after hay bale falls on himAug 26, 2010 (Belleville News-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Bartelso dairy farmer died Wednesday after a hay bale fell on him. James H. "Jim" Varel, 63, was on a front-loading tractor when the accident occurred, according to Clinton County Coroner Phil Moss. "He was loading a couple of round bales of hay when the one on top, when he was raising it up, ... rolled back on him," Moss said. Varel's son called the Clinton County Sheriff's Department about 12:55 p.m. Varel was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese, where he was pronounced dead at 2:05 p.m. Varel is survived by wife, Elizabeth Varel, nine children and six grandchildren. Visitation for Varel will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Moss Funeral Home, 630 Railroad St. in Germantown. A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia Church, 304 S. Washington St. in Bartelso.
