BRIEF: Trustees OK policy for online classes

Aug 24, 2010 (The Montana Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Trustees on Monday approved 6-0 a policy that guides how many classes students can take through a new statewide Internet course system or other online classes.

The Montana Digital Academy this year will offer free Internet classes to help kids make up classes, get ahead or take courses not offered at some schools.

Butte High students under the policy can take one class per semester during their junior year and two per semester as seniors. The board will review the course offerings each year to approve them.

In addition, digital classes will be separated for the purpose of establishing grade point averages, for the honors program and for the National Honor Society. The policy calls for a district educator who is endorsed as a teacher with the state to serve on the on-site coordinator for online classes.

Students have the option of taking online classes at the school or in their homes.

Board members Rayelynn Connole, Kristen Rosa, Patti Hepola, David Kerr, Nancy Gibson and Linda Sorini Granger voted for the policy.
