SRI International and BRS Labs Partner to Provide Integrated Security Solutions for Public Safety Organizations

MENLO PARK, Calif. and HOUSTON, Aug 03, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- SRI International is partnering with Behavioral Recognition Systems, Inc. (BRS Labs) to provide integrated security technology solutions to first responder organizations. These security solutions will allow for easier and more effective communication during emergency situations.

"SRI and BRS Labs are partnering to offer our security clients technology solutions that are cost effective and scalable," said Paul Callahan, business development manager at SRI International. "The open architecture and technology of both organizations' platforms enable clients to leverage their existing infrastructure to customize a security solution that is right for them. The integration of SRI's Aware(TM) system and BRS Labs' AISight facilitates the rapid distribution of video analytics. The analytics can then alert security professionals to items of interest in order to help them make immediate and informed decisions. We expect this capability to dramatically increase situational awareness and to assist first responder organizations in real-time during emergency situations." SRI's Direct Technology group develops, manufactures, and distributes mesh surveillance products and situational awareness systems, such as the Aware(TM) Mobile Networks. SRI's Aware system is a mobile solution for situational awareness over a secure, independent network that leverages customers' existing communications infrastructure to maximize public safety, security, and command and control resources. Aware is an instant, portable, wireless network that allows organizations such as public safety agencies or school campuses to improve response time and enhance security needs during emergency situations.

"Security is evolving from traditional technologies, requiring cutting edge platforms to capture situational awareness," said Ray Davis, CEO of BRS Labs. "The partnering of Aware and BRS Labs' AISight creates a mesh network to provide instant distribution of actionable intelligence across mobile devices." AISight combines computer vision with machine learning technology to provide actionable intelligence through real-time behavioral patterns. AISight takes visual input from a live camera or recorded video, learns what activities and behaviors normally occur within each unique camera's environment, and notifies security personnel of unexpected or unusual behaviors with real-time alerts. The system is managed and monitored through desktop and browser-based applications, hand-held devices or existing command and control systems and third-party video management systems (VMS). AISight is currently deployed in applications across the world including seaports, airports, transportation, law enforcement, public facilities, and other complex environments involving large-scale and diverse distribution of surveillance cameras.

SRI, which was founded by Stanford University as Stanford Research Institute in 1946 and became independent in 1970, has been meeting the strategic needs of clients and partners for more than 60 years. Perhaps best known for its invention of the computer mouse and interactive computing, SRI has also been responsible for major advances in networking and communications, robotics, drug discovery and development, advanced materials, atmospheric research, education research, economic development, national security, and more. The nonprofit institute performs sponsored research and development for government agencies, businesses, and foundations. SRI also licenses its technologies, forms strategic alliances, and creates spin-off companies. In 2009, SRI's consolidated revenues, including its wholly owned for-profit subsidiary, Sarnoff Corporation, were approximately $470 million.

About BRS Labs BRS Labs is a software development company that has created the industry's first behavioral analysis system for video surveillance that adaptively learns behavior patterns in complex environments. BRS Labs is the only company that has been able to apply computer-vision and artificial neural network (ANN) capabilities to video analytics, thereby greatly enhancing operator awareness and effectiveness in improving security. No human is required to define parameters for the software to recognize behavior or objects; the software reports unusual or suspicious behaviors based on memories it has acquired through observations over time. BRS Labs was founded in November 2005 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas with U.S. and international offices in London, Sao Paulo, and Washington, DC.
