PennDOT takes on motorcycle safety with online documentary: Riders talk about injuries and deaths
Jul 27, 2010 (The Morning Call - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A documentary with interviews from Pennsylvania motorcycle riders about the dangers of riding debuted online Tuesday to promote the state Department of Transportation motorcycle safety classes.
The 18-minute documentary, "Live Free Ride Alive," features riders who explain their reasons for riding despite the dangers and encourages riders to upload their own video stories.
One father tells of how he went to the emergency room after his daughter's motorcycle accident and the neurosurgeon told him "her brain is mush."
Zach Connell of Jenkintown says he will never recover completely from his accident, which badly injured his leg. He says he can put out cigarettes on his leg without feeling pain.
Another rider says there are only two types of riders: "Ones who have seen the pavement and ones that will."
The video can be viewed at http://www.LiveFreeRideAlive.com.
The site encourages riders to take the "Be One Less" pledge and also includes information about motorcycle safety, including sections on gear, rider tips and state statistics. In Pennsylvania last year, there were 3,736 motorcycle accidents that resulted in 3,677 injuries and 204 deaths. The sites says motorcycle riders are 35 times more likely to die in an vehicle accident than people in cars.
