The Fresno Bee, Calif., Rick Bentley column: 'Paranormal' examines Fresno videoJul 21, 2010 (The Fresno Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Fresno man's grainy security video of a pair of odd-looking creatures crossing his lawn will be featured in the new Syfy Channel series "Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files," airing at 10 p.m. today. One of the show's two crews of investigators traveled here two months ago to look into the mysterious footage shot in 2007. "This particular case in Fresno is one of the most memorable cases I have ever been involved with," says Bill Murphy, a lead scientist/investigator on the series. The longtime investigator of paranormal phenomena is an expert at spotting when digital manipulation has been used to create a hoax video. "My first reaction to the video was 'I need to see this one again.' That's a good sign. After a number of views, we could not explain it away, so it warranted a closer look," Murphy says. The new series doesn't collect proof of the paranormal but examines evidence others have posted online, from alien spacecraft to ghosts. Murphy and former FBI agent Ben Hansen start their work in the studio and travel to the location if more research is needed. Murphy doesn't give much away about the Fresno video. But, he says the fact he and his team traveled to Fresno for further research is a clue to how interesting he found the footage. The homeowner, who's not identified in the segment, was alerted to a problem outside his home by his barking dogs. Their barks sounded odd, so the man checked his security monitor. That's when he first saw the strange creatures. Although they move across the yard in a walking motion, they don't appear to be the shape or size of any human or animal. "It does appear to be a creature of some sort. But it doesn't look or behave like any creature we know of. It met the criteria for us to investigate: There's compelling video, an available eye witness and we can we test it," Murphy says. Because the video dates back to 2007, there was no evidence found at the location. Murphy says that often he's left with more questions than answers.
