Two-day hunt ends with arrest of burglary suspectJul 16, 2010 (The Hutchinson News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A 40-year-old man suspected in six burglaries was arrested at 1 a.m. Thursday after he eluded officers for two days, hiding in a wooded area in northern Reno County. Before being taken into custody, however, Thomas Goin led sheriff's officers on a high-speed chase in northwest Hutchinson, according to Reno County Undersheriff Sheldon Stewart. The search by Reno County Sheriff's officers began Tuesday afternoon in the wooded area southwest of 95th and Lorraine, Sheriff Randy Henderson said. A resident who knew a burglary had occurred Sunday in the area had called 911 to report seeing an unknown man outside his residence. After officers began searching the area, they saw a man run into the woods Tuesday afternoon. Officers surrounded the area and used the CodeRed telephone alert system to notify residents in a 2-square-mile area that a burglary suspect was at large. The Kansas Highway Patrol, along with dogs from the Hutchinson Correctional Facility, joined in the search for the suspect. With 100-degree temperatures taking a toll on the 37 officers involved in the hunt, Henderson called off the search just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, although officers continued to patrol the area. Sheriff's Sgt. Lance Smith, assigned to search for the suspect Wednesday evening near 82nd and Plum, spotted a pickup leaving the area of 82nd and Rolling Dunes Drive, according to a sheriff's department news release. The truck didn't stop at the stop sign at 82nd and Plum, and it fled from Smith as he attempted to pull it over. The pursuit, which lasted about 12 minutes and reached speeds of 100 mph in northwest Hutchinson, ended at 17th and Harding when the driver stopped and fled on foot into a wooded area. Two officers found Goin hiding in the brush and took him into custody. Goin matched the description of the burglary suspect, and the truck he was traveling in had just been stolen from a residence in the 82nd and Rolling Dunes Drive neighborhood, Baughman said. "I'm confident we have the guy" officers had been looking for, he said. EMS was called to evaluate Goin, although he didn't suffer any injuries, Sheriff's Capt. Wayne Baughman said. "He was worn out," Baughman said. "It was a heavily wooded area with brush and plum thickets." Goin, who remains jailed on $48,250 bond, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of aggravated burglary, four counts of burglary, six counts of theft and criminal trespass. Goin was not armed upon his arrest, although detectives have recovered guns reported stolen from one of the homes Goin is suspected of burglarizing. Baughman could not comment further on the details of the burglaries, other than to say they all occurred at residences in northern Reno County and on North Lorraine. He expected charges to be filed today, when Goin will likely make his first appearance in court. According to Kansas Department of Corrections records, Goin was discharged from parole in 2004 after serving time for crimes that occurred between 1986 and 1992 in Johnson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties, including aggravated robbery, robbery, kidnapping, two counts of burglary, three counts of theft and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm.
