'Swisscable questions economic viability of FTTH networks'Jul 15, 2010 (DMEUROPE via COMTEX) -- The Swiss association of cable operator Swisscable has attacked plans to roll-out FTTH fibre-optic broadband networks, questioning the economic viability of such projects when cable network operators already provide super-high-speed internet in m,ore than 300 locations across the country. Cable operators currently offer minimum 50 Mbps speeds in more than 300 towns and cities, reaching around 1.1 million homes, with speeds of up to 100 Mbps possible on some networks. Swisscable argues that cable internet is not only a cheaper and potent alternative to Swisscom's DSL services (up to 20 Mbps), but also to fibre-optic broadband services which will only be available to the minority of Swiss homes within five years.
