[July 14, 2010] Cote d'Ivoire's presidential election could be held in October : PM Tweet ABIDJAN, Jul 14, 2010 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Cote d'Ivoire's presidential election which has been postponed several times since 2005 could be held in October, the country's Prime Minister Guillaume Soro has said. "This election should be held latest by October," Soro estimated in an interview he accorded to a Pan African monthly publication "Notre Afrik." On Monday, the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) received a new provisional electoral list with 5.7 million potential voters and the body will begin verification exercise on this list very soon. "If we take into account the time it will take to verify and sort out all electoral disputes, say 21 days, we can confidently expect that the final list will be published within two months," Soro said. He said "if everything goes according to plan, then we can say that organization of presidential elections will just be a matter of weeks." The presidential election is considered to be the solution to the political crisis that broke out in the country in September 2002 when a rebel group where Soro is the secretary general attempted to overthrow the government. The two parties signed a political accord in March 2007. This accord provided for power sharing where the post of the prime minister was given to the ex-rebels. It also provided for disarmament of the rebels, re-unification of the country and organization of elections in order to bring back peace to the country. [ Back To TMCnet.com's Homepage ]
