2010 a challenging year for Epson

Jul 14, 2010 (Bangkok Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The projector business is at a promising stage with growth at 20 percent, or 1.5 billion baht, according to Epson Thailand.

The company recently introduced eight new projector models, from entry level to high-end solutions, especially the interactive projector and short-throw projector aimed at educational institutes.

Epson Thailand's country manager, Eiji Kato, noted that 2010 is a challenging year for Epson not only for the domestic market but also at the international level. Epson's projectors have made their way to the number-one in sales record for nine years straight (2001-2009) and the company is impelled to maintain this top position into a 10th year.

This year is also Epson's 20th anniversary and the company is devoted to sustaining its corporate growth despite the hard times arising from economic and politic factors. In 2010, Epson will focus more on the high-end models together with launching new products for the small and medium markets of which Epson is currently a market leader.

"The launch of eight products today is to show that we are acting on Epson's 'Exceed' strategy that was announced at the beginning of June. We are obliged by the strategy to offer our customers a wide range of products in order to break into any potential market. Besides, with our two core technologies in projection, 3LCD and E-TORL Lamp, we are positive that we can satisfy our customers no matter what purposes they are using our projectors for," Kato said.

According to Epson Thailand general manager, Yunyong Muneemongkoltorn, the market is forecast to grow by 20 percent this year, with education the largest sector, followed by government and corporate.

"The political situation may cause purchasing delay, however, the market is still growing," he said, adding that schools and universities use projectors and are controlled by the network system.

The company is estimated to have some 30 percent of the total market share in Thailand this year, valued at 1.5 billion baht.

Epson will increase its presence in the high-end projector and provincial markets. Currently, Epson has the largest line of products with more than 20 models, ranging from 18,900 baht up to over 100,000 baht. Yunyong noted that the mid- to high-end market have great potential.

He pointed out that 3LCD technology is superior to DLP technology as it projects images with all three primary colours (red, green, and blue) all the time thereby ensuring faithful full colour reproduction, in contrast with the one-chip DLP projector that projects colours sequentially. The 3LCD uses 25 percent less power compared to single chip DLP projectors.
