[July 13, 2010] China Expected to See 285,000 WiFi Hot Spots by Yearend Tweet BEIJING, Jul 13, 2010 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- China, the world's most populous telecom market, is expected to have more than 285,000 WiFi hot spots by the end of 2010, with the Big Three telecom operators speeding up their WiFi network deployment, said Edgar Figueroa, chief executive officer for the Wi-Fi Alliance, yesterday. China Mobile, which runs the homegrown TD-SCDMA network, is ready to add 12,000 WiFi hot spots across the country this year, disclosed Mr. Figueroa. The telecom operator had had 90,000 WiFi hot spots nationwide by the end of 2009, skyrocketing nearly 800% from more than 10,000 a year ago, according to statistics from iSuppli. China Unicom, operator of the widely-adopted WCDMA network, will procure 70,000 sets of WLAN equipment in the entire 2010 in a bid to boost sales of the WiFi-capable iPhone in mainland China. The company had had 25,000 WiFi hot spots in the country by the end of 2009, much less than the figure of 95,000 reported by China Telecom, operator of CDMA2000 network.
