WCS holds camp to prevent cyberbullyingJul 03, 2010 (The Wilson Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Middle schoolers gathered at Adams Technology Center from June 21-24 to participate in Wilson County Schools' new cyberbullying camp. The camp was initiated to educate students on the dangers of cyberbullying, according to Donna Malloy, technology specialist with Wilson County Schools. "It's a real-life problem that we need to address now," Malloy said. "Not to mention its also against the law." North Carolina passed legislation this year making cyber-bullying a criminal offense with a misdemeanor charge. The camp, which had "Delete Cyberbullying" as its theme, allowed students to create podcasts and videos to promote cyberbullying awareness using green screen technology to be shared with students and teachers throughout Wilson County Schools. "One group even wrote their very own delete cyberbullying rap," said Matthew Mayo, technology specialist with WCS. "It was awesome." The culmination of camp included the premier of a video that will be used for a county-wide Cyber Bullying campaign. Students involved in the project were exposed to an environment enriched with technology resources which was designed to enhance their writing and public speaking abilities, as well as their communication, collaboration, creativity, problem solving, and organizational skills.
