The Swedish American Chamber of Commerce of SF/Silicon Valley wants to acknowledge and highlight the Swedish presence in the area today by putting the spotlight on the successful achievers and local contributors to promoting the links between Sweden and the US. On October 22, 2010 SACC-SF/SV will present the first annual celebration of the Swedish Bay Area Achievement Awards. Nominations are being accepted right now and until July 31, 2010. Swedes, among other things, invented the propeller, the zipper, dynamite, the adjustable wrench and the computer mouse. They also sailed the Seven Seas one thousand years ago, started a revolution when Ericsson Radio launched the first mobile phone, created the turbo engine at SAAB, the safety belt at Volvo and the first computer color screen. With approx. [80,000] Swedes now permanently living in the Bay Area, a significant portion of our talent has been exported to the dynamic Bay Area which is home to the top communications and technology businesses like Apple, Cisco and Google and iconic global brands such as Levi Strauss and Gap. Swedes are also frequently represented in leading local financial service firms, architecture and design companies as well as in the wine industry further north. The idea behind the Swedish Bay Area Achievement Award is to build upon the Swedish traditions of invitation and collaboration says Nils Welin, Chairman for SACC San Francisco. Working across the board between different Swedish organizations and companies in order to recognize individual(s) behind large and small successes is really what the Chamber represents. The award will recognize and stimulate new and past achievements. This years awards will cover three areas of achievement: Businessinnovative thinking, Social responsibility or uncompromising commitment; Partnershipmost beneficial exchange creating a long-lasting relationship between Sweden and the U.S.; and, Cultural enrichment successfully preserving or furthering our Swedish heritage and traditions.
