GCCC hosts 43rd annual rodeo


Mar 05, 2010 (The Garden City Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The 43rd annual Garden City Community College rodeo starts tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Horse Palace on the Finney County Fairgrounds. The rodeo will be run on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., then conclude Sunday, starting at 1:30 p.m.



There will be approximately 400 collegiate competitors from Kansas and Oklahoma. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for children (6 to 12), or there is a family pass for $20. Children 5 and under are admitted free.

The rodeo, which is on National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association circuit, will have a "long go" performance on Friday and Saturday evening, then will have the "short go" championship round on Sunday for top contenders from the preliminary rounds.


Men's events include tie down roping, steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. The women's events include barrel racing, goat tying and breakaway roping. Team roping is a co-ed event.

The Garden City men's team is coming off a sixth-place finish in the Kansas State University rodeo on Feb. 21 in Manhattan. The Busters' Jeston Meade won the bull riding with 91 points. Meade is ranked first in the region in bull riding. Justin Pollmiller is seventh in bareback riding; Tim Jeter is 13th in bull riding; Royce Johnson 14th in steer wrestling; Collin Domer, 14th in team roping, as a header; and Duell Strickler, 13th in in team roping, as a heeler.

GCCC will next compete in the Fort Scott rodeo on March 12-14.
