IBM opens energy and utilities solutions lab in China


Mar 05, 2010 (TELECOMWORLDWIRE via COMTEX) -- Technology company IBM (NYSE: IBM) yesterday announced the opening of its Energy and Utilities Solutions Lab in Beijing, China where it will develop industry specific offerings and best practices to improve the safety, efficiency and intelligence of energy and utility networks.



The company said that its new E&U Solutions Lab is part of its strategy to address the increasing demand for smart grid initiatives in China, which is expected to grow at about 5.5% per year until 2020. China has allocated USD7.3bn to energy system reforms which are designed to improve energy efficiency and to expedite the development of clean energy. The reforms calls for the improvement of existing grid networks and the delivery of new and renewable energy such as wind and solar power.

IBM has begun work with the China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), a subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to develop an optimised distribution network planning platform to support decision-making for energy savings, loss reduction and network reliability improvement. The platform is currently being used by a power company under SGCC as a pilot scheme, according to IBM.


No details of any financial nature regarding the IBM venture were disclosed.
