Cycling club awards scholarships to riders in Central Minnesota

Feb 26, 2010 (St. Cloud Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A local cycling club awarded a different kind of scholarship for junior riders.

The Mid-Minnesota Cycling Club, which promotes cycling in Central Minnesota, recently awarded money to four young cyclists for the upcoming cycling season.

This is the first time the bicycling organization offered reimbursements to youth cyclists for entering up to six races. It hopes to make it an annual event.

Each winner also received a custom jersey to wear at competitions. In return, the winners will help maintain trails and volunteer at local races, said Kyia Anderson, president of Mid-Minnesota Cycling Club.

"Our vision is to give an opportunity to junior cyclists who might not otherwise compete because of funds," Anderson said.

Two of Bryon Amo's children, Josie, 10, and Sawyer, 9, won scholarships. The Sauk Rapids father said he, his wife and two children ride as a family.

Last summer, the family, who are members of the cycling club, competed in a number of races. The expenses added up. Entry fees range from $25-$30 per person, and jerseys can cost $50-$100, Amo said.

"It's awesome for the kids," Amo said. "It saves a ton of money and it will get them to more races. So it's a win-win for the whole family." This year, all four applicants received the awards, Anderson said. Each filled out an application and wrote a cover letter.

Amo is excited to spend more time cycling as a family, he said.

"It'll be a step for my kids to get out, to make good choices and get off the couch," Amo said.
