USAID, IITA to Train Farmers On Safe Use of HerbicidesFeb 25, 2010 (Daily Trust/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-MARKET survey is collaborating with the International Institute for tropical Agriculture (IITA) to train farmers on safe application of herbicides for weeds control. The two bodies have agreed to ensure a steady supply of inputs to the farmers at a discounted rate backed by trainings on the safe use of their products. IITA, the provider of the platform, will provide technical support in a weed control private-public sector model linking resource poor farmers with control giants such as Syngenta and Dizengoff. Project Manager, IITA-MARKETS Cassava Value Chain Project Dr. Bassey Tarawali said the initiative would provide employment for the teeming youths in the rural communities by boosting incomes and guaranteeing food security. He said: "This initiative will not only control weeds but will also create jobs in the rural communities and boost yield." |
