Digi-Key releases iPhone application

Feb 09, 2010 (Grand Forks Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Thief River Falls-based electronics distributor Digi-Key has released its own iPhone application, launching its mobile presence that company officials hope will make doing business even easier.

Tony Harris, vice president for global e-commerce, said the new application released Jan. 31 makes sense because about 78 percent of the company's North American revenues and 98 percent of its international business happen on the Internet.

The company has focused on "strong innovation" for years, he said, and was a pioneer for introducing a toolbar and other Web features.

"When we look at the iPhone application, it's just another one of our unique ways and industry-leading ways to provide access to Digi-Key remotely," Harris said.

The application is free and available in the iTunes App Store for iPhone and iPod touch users in North America. He said it allows users to search products and categories, upload shopping carts and convert an order similar to how it would happen on Digi-Key's Web site.

"We want to provide customers with the easiest access to our components," he said.

The application has been available only since Jan. 31 but has already been in the top 100 business downloads of the App Store several times in both the U.S. and Canada.
