Skyhook Wireless Brings Location Engine to FlixsterFeb 10, 2010 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Skyhook wireless said that it is making going to the movies easier than ever for users of Flixster's Android app, which is utilizing Skyhook's location engine to provide showtimes and theater information to moviegoers. Skyhook said it teamed up with Flixster to improve location to the "Movies" Android app. Flixster's "Movies" iPhone mobile app, also Skyhook-enabled, has been a huge success. "After launching our Android app, we knew we could make it even better by improving the location function, and also felt that Skyhook would be the perfect addition since it has performed so well for our 'Movies' app," said Joe Greenstein, co-founder and CEO of San Francisco-based Flixster, which is the world's biggest online movie community and leading mobile provider of movie information. Flixster has more than 20 million unique monthly visitors and recently acquired Rottentomatoes.com, further expanding its worldwide reach. "Without Skyhook, location-aware consumer apps can provide inaccurate results and overall a poor user experience," said Kate Imbach, vice president of marketing at Skyhook wireless. "Flixster chose Skyhook location to help reliably deliver the most useful location-specific movie information, and in the future enable new social features." Flixster's mobile apps are available at the Android Market, at the iTunes App Store, at Blackberry App World and at the Palm Pre Applications website. Skyhook wireless offers a publicly available SDK for Android developers. Skyhook wireless is a company focusing on the development of hybrid positioning system to fully leverage Wi-Fi, GPS and cell towers delivering precise location data supporting the growing market for location-based services.
