BRIEF: Weld upset with announcement of DOLA grantsFeb 09, 2010 (Greeley Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Two Weld County Commissioners are upset over the method the Colorado Department of Local Affairs made grants to four applicants impacted by energy and mineral production. The town of Parachute received $8 million, Mesa County got $3.2 million, the Southwest Council of Governments received $3 million and the city of Delta got $2.8 million which was made available through a bill passed by the Colorado Legislature last year. The funds are a one-time allocation for energy-impacted cities and towns, according to a press release from Gov. Bill Ritter's office. Ritter said the $17 million in grants will help create 1,853 jobs and strengthen local economies. Weld was one of 10 applicants for the grants. It sought $3.5 million to improve communications that was realized following a survey conducted by Motorola following the May 2008 tornado that tore through the western part of Weld before hitting the east side of Windsor. Total cost of updates to the county's communications system, which includes a tower near Nunn and others along the western edge of the county, is $6 million. The county already had the matching funds for the $3.5 million it sought.
