Akamai sales rise in Q4 and yearFeb 09, 2010 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) -- Web content delivery company Akamai has reported a 1% decrease in net income to $40.1m for the fourth quarter 2009, compared to a net income of $40.5m in the year-ago quarter. Revenue increased 12% to $238.3m. Operating income increased 14% to $62.2m, while diluted EPS declined 5% to $0.21. Cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter was $181.3m. The company repurchased 646,000 shares of common stock for $15.1m. The company said sales through resellers accounted for 19% of the total revenue and sales outside the United States accounted for 28%. The number of customers under recurring contracts at the end of the quarter increased 9% to 3,122. During the quarter, the company expanded its cloud-based suite of security capabilities with the introduction of its Web Application Firewall managed service, implemented on its EdgePlatform distributed computing system, to provide a scalable edge defense system for blocking web application attacks in the cloud. For fiscal 2009, Akamai reported a marginal increase in net income to $146m compared to a net income of $145.1m in fiscal 2008. Revenue increased 9% to $860m. Paul Sagan, president and CEO at Akamai, said: "We were very pleased with how our business performed in 2009, capping a solid year with a return to double-digit revenue growth in the fourth quarter. For the year, we grew revenue, improved our cash gross margins, and generated over $400m of cash from operations in a tough economic environment.
