[January 22, 2010] Labour unrest rocks Nokia Tweet (Mail Today (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MOBILE handset maker Nokia was hit by labour unrest after nearly 2,000 workers of the company's major manufacturing unit are on strike for the third day protesting the ' arbitrary' suspension of 62 colleagues. This is the second such agitation at the global cellphone major's state- of- the- art facility near Sriperumpudur where an 8,000- strong workforce is employed. The earlier strike in August last year was for higher wages. The strike has resulted in the disruption of more than one lakh units of mobile handsets besides seriously affecting various other production related works. According to the DMK- led Progressive Employees Union president M. Shanmugham, a labourer was suspended for refusing to report for another shift. His colleagues who protested the suspension was also handed out the same punishment. On the suggestion of the Deputy Labour Commissioner, a meeting was arranged between the management and the labour union to resolve the issue. But the management has maintained that the strike was illegal and said the agitation should be called off. Another meeting has been fixed for the coming Monday. (c) 2009 India Today Group.
