Atheros' Technologies Demonstrate Seamless Connectivity Across Computing, Networking and Mobile Markets

(Market Wire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LAS VEGAS, NV -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 01/07/10 -- Atheros Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHR), a global leader in innovative technologies for wireless and wired communications, is showing new connectivity features and applications for the computing, networking and mobile markets at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Atheros' demonstrations will take place in its private booth located at the LVCC, South Hall 4 #35374MP or visitors can visit the company's public booth, which is focused on its new AMP(TM) powerline communications (PLC) technology, located at South Hall 4 #35901.

Atheros' showcased demonstrations express the company's commitment to delivering the smartest technologies and solutions that enable its customers to build products and launch applications that connect, share and work together with simplicity and ease. Atheros' portfolio offers seamless connectivity that moves content from 'there' to 'here' in a way that's transparent to the user. As an industry leader in connectivity technologies, Atheros' goal is to change the very frame of reference for 'there' so that now, 'There is Here.' Digital Home A Gigabit of unlicensed spectrum in the digital home demonstration: Atheros is featuring the world's first Wi-Fi/Powerline Communications/Ethernet router reference design. This reference design combines the best-in-class quality and performance of Atheros' XSPAN® 11n, AMP powerline, and ETHOS switch technologies to deliver an unprecedented level of robust, whole home network coverage. With this dynamic combination, Atheros is addressing the most challenging networking issues in the home, enabling HD-capable whole home coverage, seamless HD content delivery and easy installation and set up. Atheros is leveraging its chip and system integration capabilities to enable the mass market adoption of products based on the powerful combination of its WLAN, PLC and Ethernet.

Smart Grid/Smart Home PLC demonstration: Atheros will be demonstrating its newly announced powerline system development kit to support smart grid applications in the digital home. Smart homes with Home Area Networks (HANs) use Atheros' PLC technology to control and monitor home appliances, and tap into the Smart Grid through smart electricity meters, enabling home owners to save money through more efficient electricity use.

Enhanced Video over Wireless and Wired demonstration: For the digital home, Atheros' enhanced video capabilities over independent Wi-Fi® and powerline communications links demonstrate robust link performance and high quality-of-service (QoS) for smooth, uninterrupted HD video transmissions from room-to-room or from the Internet. Atheros will also demonstrate its intelligent Ethernet carrier-grade features designed to optimize video transmissions over Ethernet in a home environment.

Computing XSPAN with SST3(TM) 11n demonstration: For the highest performance multimedia networking, the AR9300 family of XSPAN with SST3 delivers 450 Mbps PHY rates derived from its 3-stream 11n MIMO configuration, combined with a unique set of range-enhancing 11n features, which together boost and sustain signal strength at every point of the wireless link. Atheros' high-performance 11n platform supports a broad ecosystem of products for the computing, digital home and enterprise/SMB markets.

Align(TM) 1-stream and ROCm® Bluetooth® combo demonstration: For notebooks and netbooks, Atheros' smart combination of its Align 1-stream with Bluetooth solution, the AR6133, significantly expands functionality for a better mobile computing user experience. The solution brings together two of the most popular connectivity technologies for mobile products and goes beyond coexistence to offer a high level of cooperation between not only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but also 3G with Atheros Universal Wireless Cooperation(TM).

Direct Connect(TM) 2.0 demonstration: For seamless device-to-device connectivity, Atheros' Direct Connect 2.0 enables easy file sharing, syncing, remote desktop access and more, while complying with the forthcoming Wi-Fi Direct standard. Additional discovery protocols such as UPnP and Bonjour are now part of Direct Connect, making it even easier to recognize and select devices to be paired to Direct Connect-enabled products.

ETHOS(TM) Green Ethernet demonstration: For notebooks and netbooks, Atheros' ETHOS controllers, utilizing smart Ethernet technology, deliver unparalleled power savings to Atheros customers. In addition to its low-power design, ETHOS technology employs advanced techniques such as the ETHOS Cable Diagnostic and Automatic Power Savings (APS), which provide substantial energy efficiencies to extend battery-life in PCs.

Mobile ROCm with Align 1-stream mobile 11n demonstration: For smartphones, mobile gaming devices and other portable CE products, Atheros' AR6003 family improves upon the industry-leading AR6002 in performance and power savings, delivering up to 85 Mbps of actual throughput and enhanced rate-over-range.

With this extraordinary mobile WLAN performance, Atheros is demonstrating HD video and audio sent from and received by mobile, handheld devices.

Additionally, the AR6003 reduces average receive current consumption by 20 percent over the AR6002 and at faster 11n rates.

High Precision Navigation Accuracy demonstration: For personal navigation devices (PNDs), netbooks, smartbooks, mobile gaming devices, media players and smart phones, the new Atheros AR1520 and Atheros FYX(TM) 1.0 software suite enables greater navigation accuracy, faster location fixes, enhanced receive sensitivity, and lower power consumption. The AR1520's best-in-class navigation accuracy will be shown with results of some of the most challenging GPS road tests in the world -- urban canyons where the view to positioning satellites is largely obstructed.
