Aculab widens codec portfolio for HD Voice

Aculab (News - Alert) widens codec portfolio for HD Voice 3 December 2009, Milton Keynes, UK – Aculab, a leading provider of enabling technologies for service providers, application developers and enterprises, today announced that its market leading Prosody X and Prosody S media processing products now support an expanded range of wideband codecs for High Definition (HD) Voice services. Among the new wideband codecs Aculab supports are G.722, G.722.1 and the G.722.2 adaptive multi-rate wideband (AMR-WB) codec. These expanded capabilities add new dimensions for application developers and service providers looking to enhance the quality of voice communications.

“The 7kHz audio bandwidth delivered by these codecs is double that of the most common codecs currently used for VoIP calls,” commented Andrew Nicholson, Aculab Product Manager. “This higher bandwidth correlates directly to better call clarity, which is certainly one of the key factors driving interest in HD Voice services. We believe our ongoing support for HD Voice technology will help our customers address evolving market needs.” Conferencing service providers use many of these wideband codecs to deliver rich, full bodied voice quality for their customers. In addition, a growing number of IVR developers and other communications technology vendors are also looking to incorporate HD Voice into both consumer and enterprise environments.” The inclusion of the G.722 series codecs gives Aculab’s Prosody X media processing boards and the Prosody S software platform the largest range of voice codec support of any media processing vendor. Over twenty narrowband codecs are supported, including G.711 and several other G series codecs. The portfolio also includes the majority of codecs used in GSM mobile networks, and many specialised codecs for military and emergency services use.

In particular, the G.722.2 codec enables developers to maximize bandwidth efficiency for mobile devices, enabling high-fidelity voice communications over sometimes constricted mobile connections.

In addition, both Prosody X and Prosody S use a common API, giving developers and system integrators complete flexibility to adapt solutions to a multitude of computer platforms, including Windows and Linux environments.
