BLOG: The Game Guy: Game-ratings app for iPhone aimed at parents [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
(St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dec. 2--[http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/the-game-guy/files/2009/12/esrb_opt.png]Sure, kids may peek at the new iPhone application featuring game ratings from the Entertainment Software Rating Board [http://www.esrb.org/index-js.jsp], but they won't give much thought to it.
No, it's the parents who'll enjoy this app as they struggle to figure what games to buy their kids this holiday.
The ESRB Rating Search App is free and available at the iTunes store [http://www.apple.com/itunes/whats-on/#apps]. It includes ratings summaries on about 18,000 titles published since June 2008, and definitions of content descriptions such "crude humor" and "blood and gore," so people better understand how those factor into each game.
To simplify matters, the Rating Search App features a simple "OK to Play?" prompt, where users just type in a game title to gain a quick summary of a game's content.
Up to now, parents may have seen the ratings on games but did not fully understand what they meant. This app helps show how, for example, games rated "T" for Teen may in fact not be suitable for all teens.
And how easy can it be for someone to simply whip out an iPhone and perform a ratings search? So easy now that even a parent can do it.
