Astel selects SES WORLD SKIES' NSS-6 satellite to connect train commuters

(EquityBites Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Operator of a satellite fleet SES WORLD SKIES, a division of SES SA (Paris:SESG)(LUxX:SESG), announced today that Astel, a telecommunications provider in Kazakhstan, is using its NSS-6 satellite to deliver the first high-speed mobile broadband and phone services to commuter train passengers in Kazakhstan.

The NSS-6 high-performance, Ku-band satellite, launched in December 2002 and located at 95° East, supports key telecoms infrastructure and broadband networks across the Middle East and Asia.

Astel is utilising the Middle East beam on SES WORLD SKIES' NSS-6 spacecraft to deliver Internet access, e-mail and VoIP telephony services at speeds of up to 2048Kb/s to National Railway Company passengers travelling the 1,300 kilometre route between Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, and its capital, Astana.

Astel has contracted over 100 MHz of transponder capacity with SES WORLD SKIES in a long-term deal, on undisclosed financial terms, to provide VSAT networks and government services in Kazakhstan.

Part of that capacity is being used to provide the new service in collaboration with Transtelecom, the service company for Kazakhstan's national railway.
