[November 25, 2009] Former Circuit City site to house appliance store Tweet Nov 25, 2009 (Catonsville Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The appliances and electronics retailer hhgregg has signed a lease to open a store at 6026 Baltimore National Pike, in Catonsville, according to Jeff Pearson, the company's vice president of marketing. The location was the site of a Circuit City store that had been a staple in Catonsville for years but was liquidated last winter after the company went bankrupt and decided to close all its locations. The new hhgregg store will likely open in late spring next year, after the company has a chance to renovate the space and hire a staff of 40 to 50 people -- which it will begin doing about eight weeks before opening, Pearson said. "We're excited about that story, that we're brining jobs to the area," he said. The national retailer sells household appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers and microwaves and a wide selection of electronics including flat-screen televisions, cameras and laptop computers, as well as video games, audio equipment, car speakers and Serta brand mattresses. In part, to support the new Catonsville store and others planned throughout the region, the company signed a lease to take over Circuit City's distribution center in Brandywine as well, Pearson said. "We're definitely in the expansion mode as a company," he said. The company most recently opened stores in Florida, Tennessee and Virginia, and is looking to open more locations in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, Pearson said. Many of the properties they are looking to open were formerly Circuit City stores, Pearson added.
