BRIEF: UA student newspaper editor cited for destroying Oregon signNov 23, 2009 (The Arizona Daily Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A University of Arizona student was arrested early Saturday morning for destroying a sign favoring Oregon's football team, police said. Shain Bergan, 21, was cited for disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace after he tore the sign off a PVC pipe that another person had affixed to the back of the sign he was holding on the UA Mall, said Sgt. Juan Alvarez, a UA Police Department spokesman. The incident occurred at 5:42 a.m., more than two hours before ESPN broadcast its "College GameDay" football pregame show from the mall, Alvarez said. Bergan, a junior majoring in journalism, is the managing editor of the Arizona Daily Wildcat student newspaper, according to the paper's web site. UA police continue to try and identify who threw a water bottle from the stands at the end of the Wildcats' 44-41 double-overtime loss to Oregon on Saturday night. The bottle struck an Oregon cheerleader, Katelynn Johnson, in the back of the head, sending her to the hospital, Alvarez said. Contact reporter Brian J. Pedersen at 573-4224 or [email protected].
