New Jersey Municipalities Combat H1N1 With Global Connect

MAYS LANDING, NJ, Nov 23, 2009 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- As municipalities and other public entities strive to prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu (also known as swine flu), the ability to contact residents with information on available vaccines is more important than ever. Two neighboring New Jersey municipalities, Wanaque and Ringwood, are already using Global Connect's Emergency Notification System to contact residents regarding the availability of H1N1 flu shots.

"Thanks to its speed and functionality, Global Connect can be a powerful weapon in the fight against both seasonal and H1N1 flu," explained Darrin Bird, Executive Vice President of Global Connect.

"Municipalities, County Health Departments and other public entities have the ability to call everyone on their call lists within a matter of minutes to report vital H1N1 information. They can also target their message to the people who are most at risk to catch the virus." Both Wanaque and Ringwood have made use of Global Connect's customized mapping capability, which allows clients to create a customized list of call recipients by selecting a specific area on a map of the municipality. "Using the Global Connect Emergency Notification System, it was easy for Wanaque and Ringwood to direct residents to particular vaccine distribution centers, based on their street addresses," said Bird.

Since supplies of the H1N1 vaccine are limited, Global Connect clients may also choose to segment a call list based on age, proximity to known H1N1 cases, or other risk factors.

The Global Connect Emergency Notification System uses Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) to send a message to a database of telephone numbers, email addresses, or fax numbers, virtually instantaneously.

In addition to customized mapping, the web-based Emergency Notification System offers a number of other features that render it particularly useful when communicating with the public regarding health issues such as H1N1, including: Instant Callback, which allows residents who need additional information or require special assistance from the municipality to make a return call to a designated telephone number with the press of a single key on their telephone keypad.

Remote Access and Deployment, giving emergency management officials the ability to deploy a message at any time, from any location. Only a telephone is required to record and send a broadcast.

Real-Time Reporting, allowing municipal officials to determine immediately which residents have been reached by telephone, and which have received messages. The system will continue to call residents who have not been reached as frequently and as many times as desired.
