Conrad Inspects Rugby Correctional CenterNov 23, 2009 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- Rugby - Senator Kent Conrad was joined by Rugby community leaders today to inspect the Heart of America Correctional and Treatment Center, which leaders agree has given an economic boost to the community and serves as an example of a successful local / federal government partnership. "Heart of America has been a real shot in the arm to the local economy. This facility has created dozens of high quality, good paying jobs and provides a real boost to local businesses," Senator Conrad said. "The men and women working at Heart of America are performing a needed public service and are doing it with great dignity and pride in partnership with the local community." Senator Conrad was accompanied on the inspection by Rugby Mayor Dale Niewoehner, Center Administrator Elaine Little, and Center Chairman David Miegler, who is also Chairman of the Pierce County Commission. The 129-bed facility in the Rugby Industrial Park supports up to 40 patients in substance abuse treatment and 89 inmates in corrections, and currently has 30 full-time employees. The jail supports the needs of Pierce, Wells, McHenry and Bottineau counties. It also serves the U.S. Marshal's Service, the U.S. Dept. of Probations, and the State of North Dakota.
