Capgemini: Sir Nick Faldo vindicated by Capgemini analysis

Nov 23, 2009 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- The Ryder Cup, arguably the most prestigious and exciting golf tournament in the world, is a team event contested once every two years between 12 golfers from Europe and 12 golfers from the USA. In 2008, after an eventual US victory, the sporting press was hugely critical of Nick Faldo's European team selection. This paper considers the decisions facing each captain going into the final day's singles matches when they have to select the order in which their players tee off.

The analysis, carried out by Capgemini Operational Research consultants focuses on a number of strategies including 'front loading' the best players at the start of the line up; attempting to sacrifice weaker players against, for example, Tiger Woods and saving the players who play well under pressure for the critical matches towards the end of the day when the Ryder Cup can either be won or lost.

The conclusions show that Sir Nick's gamble was certainly justifiable and that a significant benefit can be gained by holding back the players that play best under pressure for the critical matches that may decide the Ryder Cup.
