[November 23, 2009] Profile of China's telecom industry in Jan-Oct Tweet BEIJING, Nov 23, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The following is a profile of China's telecom industry in the first ten months of 2009: -- Overview China's telecom industry registered 2.11 trillion yuan in business volume in the first ten months of this year, up 13.7 percent year on year. Its main business revenues totaled 698.91 billion yuan, up 3.4 percent. The following chart (Chart 1) shows the main business revenues in 2006-2009. -- Subscribers The industry reported 69.31 million new phone subscribers in January-October, bringing the total number up to 1,050.91 million. The number of China's fixed phone users decreased 2.37 million to 321.38 million in October, and went down 18.98 million in the first ten months, including 14.23 million from urban regions and 4.75 million from rural regions. The number of subscribers of Personal Handyphone System (PHS) shrank 17.77 million to 51.17 million during the first ten months, with the proportion in fixed phone users dropping to 15.9 percent from 20.2 percent by the end of 2008. The following Chart 2 shows the number of newly added fixed phone users in 2007-2009. The number of mobile phone subscribers respectively increased 9.70 million and 88.29 million in October and in the first ten months of 2009, boosting the total number to 729.54 million. The following Chart 3 shows detailed figures in 2006-2009. More Internet users of basic telecom operators became inclined to adopt broadband access service. In the first ten months of 2009, the number of Internet broadband access users rose 18.01 million to 100.89 million, while that of dial up Internet service declined 3.34 million. The following Chart 4 shows the number of newly increased Internet broadband users in 2006-2009. -- Business Structure Following are two charts (Chart 5 & 6) comparing the revenue structures of China's main telecom businesses in the first ten months of 2008 and 2009. Revenues of mobile communications and data communications grew year on year by 12.4 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively, in January-October. The revenues of long distance calls and local fixed phone services declined 6.9 percent and 13.1 percent, respectively, with the proportions in the revenues of the industry's main businesses dropping 1.29 percentage points and 3.15 percentage points. The following table compares the traffic volume of local fixed phone calls with mobile phone calls in January-October 2009. The total call duration of long distance calls in the first ten months of 2009 amounted to 360.79 billion minutes, up 7.1 percent year on year. The duration of fixed phone long distance calls and IP calls dropped 4.3 percent and 15.7 percent, respectively, and that of mobile long distance calls went up 30.9 percent. -- Regional development Telecom business revenues in central China and west China in January-October went up 4.5 percent and 9.0 percent, respectively, and those in east China slightly climbed 0.9 percent. The following Chart 8 shows the revenue comparison among these regions. The following chart (Chart 9) makes comparison in new fixed phone users in these regions. The following chart (Chart 10) shows the growth of mobile phone users in these regions. Investment in fixed assets in east, central and west China in January-October respectively increased by 24.2 percent, 35.6 percent and 42.3 percent on year. The following Chart 12 shows top 10 provinces and municipalities in terms of revenues from main telecom businesses in January-October. Guangdong province took the lead in the country in terms of numbers of fixed phone users and mobile phone users.
