[November 23, 2009] Qualcomm Quickening Expansion in China Tweet SHANGHAI, Nov 23, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a global pioneer in CDMA technology, is poised to speed up business expansion in China to snatch a bigger slice of the bourgeoning 3G market. The aggressive deployment of 3G networks in China is exciting telecom equipment makers and networking solution providers around the world, said the San Diego, California-based company when unveiled its financial report for the fiscal year 2009. Proportion of revenue from China leaped to 23% in the year from 21% in the previous fiscal year, making the country the second biggest market for Qualcomm by revenue. Boosted by local telecom carriers' continuous investment, China's nascent 3G market have grown by leaps and bounds in the past year, according to Qualcomm, bullish on its business prospect in the country. The number of 3G CDMA users in China is expected to surge 900% to more than 279 million in 2013 from 28 million in 2008, predicted Informa Telecoms & Media and Wireless Intelligence. Qualcomm will join hands with more telecom carriers and mobile phone makers throughout the country to capitalize on the terminal sales and user boom in the wake of the 3G network penetration. The company, which has tied up with a dozen of terminal makers in the past 12 months, has had over 40 partners in the country by far. As part of its efforts for business expansion, Qualcomm has entered into an agreement with China Mobile, one of the Big Three integrated telecom carriers in the country, to simultaneously develop Long Term Evolution (LTE) chips based on Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) technologies. At the beginning of this November, the company announced the rollout of the first model of LTE FDD sample chips designed for terminals. Advanced technologies are needed to come up with the fast-growing demand for data application in the market, said Bill Davidson, senior vice president for Qualcomm Global Marketing and Investor Relations, explaining why Qualcomm is motivated to enhance the LTE technology. Presently, China Mobile has set up a small-sized experimental TD-LTE network in Shanghai that is scheduled to kick off trial commercial operation during the World Expo next year. While making a push in the LTE chip market, Qualcomm is striving to make its name seen in the fast-expanding smartphone market.
