[November 22, 2009] Littelfuse to Host Webinar: Preventing Arc Flash Through Resistance Grounding Tweet Nov 23, 2009 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Littelfuse, Inc., in partnership with Plant Engineering magazine, reported it will offer a complimentary web-based seminar titled "Preventing Arc Flash through Resistance Grounding," on December 2, at 2 pm Eastern Time. According to Littelfuse, this webcast will offer practical tips for reducing hazardous conditions, such as Arc Flash and ground faults, with minimal interruption to plant operations. Current trends show that plant electrical workers and power system designers are taking a new look at different strategies to prevent Arc Flash, Littelfuse said in a release. Long used in mines, petrochemical plants, and other heavy industrial plants, resistance grounding is now winning converts in general industry. This systemic approach eliminates phase-to-ground Arc Flash incidents from forming anywhere in the system. If the neutral point of the transformer connects to earth ground via a power resistor, then the resistance limits phase-to-ground current to a few amps, not enough to cause downtime by tripping the overcurrent protection device, and not enough to allow an Arc Flash Hazard to occur. Most Arc Flash events, even phase-to-phase, begin as ground faults. As a result, this approach can eliminate 95 percent of all Arc Flash incidents, according to IEEE. "Preventing Arc Flash through Resistance Grounding" will be broadcast on December 2, at 2 pm Eastern Time (11 am PST/1 pm CST). The event is open to the public at no cost, but advance registration is required. The seminar will also be archived on the Littelfuse website for those unable to attend the original broadcast. The webinar will be presented by Tony Locker, P.E., an authority on resistance grounding and moderated by Plant Engineering editor Bob Vavra. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions of the presenter in this live event.
