East Side appoints Moser as interim chief

Nov 21, 2009 (San Jose Mercury News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The East Side Union High School District board has appointed Dan Moser as interim superintendent of the 25,000-student district.

Moser, the district's associate superintendent, has been heading the district since former Superintendent Bob Nunez was placed on leave in August. Nunez agreed to step down last month after reports showed irregularities in expenses and accounting. His separation agreement awards him $120,000 and four years of health benefits.

Moser, who has been a teacher and administrator with the East Side district for 36 years, was named acting superintendent Thursday. At the same meeting, the board announced it will conduct a national search, beginning in January, for a permanent replacement.

The board approved creating a seven-member audit committee to oversee district spending. The members, including two trustees and several members of the public, will be named in December.

The appointment of an audit committee was spurred by the investigations into Nunez, who led the district for four years. The most recently released report, a 2,100-page document by the San Francisco law firm Hanson Bridgett, reviewed two years' worth of Nunez's credit card spending, questioned some spending but concluded that Nunez did not improperly receive vacation pay or commit a conflict of interest.
