Weak economy helping spur lower consumer electronics prices

(Canadian Press Broadcast Wire (Canada) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MONTREAL - A Toronto-based market research firm says it's a great time to buy consumer electronics in Canada.

The NPD Group says prices for digital cameras, GPS devices, video game consoles, computers, TVs and the like have all been dropping.

For example, a 10-megapixel camera has dropped to $193 from $311.

But the firm says Canadian consumer spending is down about 10 per cent this year due to the tighter economy.

NDP analyst Mark Haar says that while prices have dropped in Canada, they are likely falling even more in the United States.

Canada's consumer electronics industry is worth an estimated $12 billion a year.
