[November 20, 2009] Doral Middle School students awarded new computers: Doral Middle School students receive new computers from a community service organization. Tweet Nov 20, 2009 (The Miami Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A group of Doral Middle School students each received new Dell computers earlier this month after completing the PBS&J's 2009 Miami KIDS CLASS (Computer Lab Adventure for Super Students) program. PBS&J is a chain of employee-owned businesses dedicated to engineering, environmental science, architecture, and construction. One of its offices is located on 2001 NW 107th Ave. The computers were awarded during a Nov. 9 ceremony at the school, located on 5005 NW 112th Ave. Region Superintendent Carmen Marinelli and Arlene Martinez, director of the Office of Community Services at Miami-Dade Public Schools, attended the ceremony. The 10 students were chosen based on their grades and lack of access to a computer at home. They followed a six-week computer course that taught Microsoft applications, and webpage design once a week. After completion of the course, they were given a desktop. The recipients said the computers would make it easier to study. "I used to go to the library to do homework before. Now, I use the computer for school," said Anela Marquez. "I can also do this assignment for my mom, where I research in the Internet about a topic, and then I tell her about it." The program was created in 2001 for students in Lake Sybelia Elementary in Orlando. In 2004 it began expanding throughout Florida, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada.
