Aegis Mobility to Participate in FCC Workshop on Technology Solutions to Distracted Driving

VANCOUVER, British Columbia --(Business Wire)-- Aegis Mobility announced today that it will participate as a panelist for the Federal Communications Commission workshop on technology solutions to distracted driving, held today in Washington, DC.

The workshop will explore technology innovations and applications that may eliminate or significantly reduce the problem of distracted driving, as well as educate the public about such dangerous behavior. Aegis Mobility is the developer of DriveAssist™, the first technology that enables cell phones to help manage communication by preventing and controlling incoming and outgoing text messages, calls, and Internet access when a cell phone user is driving. The software runs on the subscriber's mobile phone and automatically determines the driving context of the user.

In recent testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski (News - Alert) stated that at any given moment on U.S. roads there are over 812,000 distracted drivers. Chairman Genachowski pledged that "the FCC will undertake a new initiative to identify and assess technologies that can reduce distracted driving," and noted that "new ideas, advances in technology, and entrepreneurial thinking can create solutions that are sustainable, consumer-friendly, and non-intrusive." The FCC (News - Alert) workshop and initiatives follow other recent federal actions to curb the epidemic of mobile phone use while driving. Aegis Mobility also attended the recent Distracted Driving Summit convened by Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, during which President Obama announced an Executive Order prohibiting federal workers and contractors from texting while driving on the job or when using government vehicles. In addition, over 200 bills have been introduced this year in 46 state legislatures to ban or restrict cell phone use while driving.

"Over three years of research and development have paid off," said Bill Stack, an Aegis Mobility Vice President. "Regulatory and media attention, combined with a compelling body of research on the dangers of distracted driving have fueled market demand for DriveAssist to help parents, employers and others reduce liability and increase driver safety."
