China Mobile to Stop Using Nortel Equipment in GSM Network

BEIJING, Nov 20, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Taking network security and stability into consideration, China Mobile will be likely to stop using GSM equipment supplied by Nortel Networks Corporation (NYSE: NT) in its existing GSM network, disclosed a person in the know.

Nortel used to be the mainly equipment supplier for China Mobile's GSM network. It once deployed network for China Mobile in Hebei, Shaanxci, Tianjin, Xinjiang, Anhui, Liaoning, as well as Hunan.

In China Mobile's existing GSM network, about 30,000 base stations and over 100,000 carrier frequencies were supplied by Nortel.

Nortel's GSM products have high quality, but some of the products are aging while Nortel cannot upgrade them in time, which result in difficulties in network maintenance, explained the insider.

Before the mature of the TD-SCDMA industrial chain, China Mobile still depends on GSM network and takes measures for network upgrade and capacity enlargement because the network is the largest profit distributor for the telecom carrier.
